FAQ

Where is the best destination, what size boat should I charter, do I need a skipper, can we fish from the boat. There are many different options available when chartering a sail boat. Sail Elite can help you find the perfect location, boat and crew to ensure a memorable experience.

Misconceptions

I am going to be stuck on a boat for days.
We island hop, meaning that we average about 2-3 hrs a day sailing, going to the next island experience, then we are either snorkeling, pulling into the bar or picking up a mooring ball for the night.
I am going to be horribly seasick if the weather is bad.
Usually, if the weather conditions cause a rough sea, we will stay at the bar or a calm cove or find land activities to do. We also recommend the seasickness patch if you know you suffer from motion sickness.
The cabins are really small and claustrophobic.
Most cabins have a queens size bed, tons of windows and hatches and bathroom en-suite. The newer hull designs have improved the cabin space significantly allowing for more headroom and storage.

British Virgin Islands

Getting to the BVIs.
You can fly into Beef Island, airport code EIS or to St. Thomas airport code STT. Some people stay over in Puerto Rico and fly to the BVIs the next morning. Generally, you will arrive late afternoon/evening, the night before we set sail.
What are the sailing conditions like in the BVI?
Wind in the BVI's are usually out of the northeast to southeast at 15 – 25 knots. In November, winds should be out of the east to northeast allowing reaching legs at 10 to12 knots. The ride will be wild, fun, and memorable. Currents generally flow in a westerly direction and the tidal range is approximately eight inches.

Belize

Getting to Belize
Fly into Belize City, airport code BZE. Generally, you will arrive around lunch time, with enough time to catch the puddle jumper to Placencia or San Pedro. If you choose to fly to Placencia, we have found Tropic Air to be reliable and on time. We can help arrange your flight, or you can deal directly with Tropic Air, see www.tropicair.com
Can we SCUBA dive in Belize?
Belize is know for its beautifuyl coral barrier reef, second in length only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. We offer rendezvous SCUBA dives, typically two-tank dives that include lunch. The "BLUE HOLE", a full day, three tank dive is also available, but must be pre-paid and coordinated with your flotilla leader. You do not need to bring dive equipment (BC & Belts), you can rent everything.
Fishing in Belize
Fish while you sail! Although most fish species can be found in Belizean waters year-round, the ideal months for fishing are May, June and July, according to the Belize Tourism Board's website. Purchase fishing license online: https://apps.coastalzonebelize.org/ or directly from the charter company upon arrival.
Cash & Credit Cards
The Belizean dollar is pegged to the US$ at 2:1, making everything half the $US. Most of the sailing bases have ATM machines and accept credit cards, and traveler’s checks. Bring plenty of cash. I usually plan on a $100 a day to be safe. $500 to $600 should cover most cash needs. All of the restaurants accept credit cards. You should use your credit cards wherever possible to conserve your cash. You will need cash for such items as taxis, beverages, departure tax, customs fees, personal incidentals, and gratuities. My guideline is that whatever amount of cash you bring - plan on leaving it in the islands.
